Very few companies in Sri Lanka are certified by the globally regarded ISO 50001 energy management standard. In 2023, a survey of industrial plants conducted by UNIDO and Global Efficiency Intelligence found only 6% held this certification. Most Sri Lankan companies are unaware of the cost saving opportunities and environmental benefits that can be achieved through data driven energy management systems and relevant efficiency solutions. This lack of awareness and expertise are preventing companies from investing in energy efficiency or other renewable energy technologies. This means there is great potential for capacity building and support to increase energy management systems certification in Sri Lankan industries.

The project team selects the trainees according to the criteria published as part of each call and approved by the Industry Support Working Group. Under the supervision of UNIDO experts, selected applicants are required to implement an EnMS and ESO in their manufacturing facilities.
The cross-industry EnMS training programme led by UNIDO and Sri Lanka’s National Cleaner Production Centre is already catalyzing change and fueling the energy transition in Sri Lanka’s industrial sector. Leading industries – textile and apparel, manufacturing, plantations, and others – are demonstrating their commitment to more cost-efficient and cleaner industrial practices that result in significant long-term GHG emissions reductions.
The 12-month EnMS training for Sri Lankan industries first ran in 2023. In 2024, more than 420 people applied for a place on the course – an increase of 200 per cent from the first year. Seventy people were selected to participate in 2024, a mix of engineers, energy managers, industry professionals and lecturers from some of Sri Lanka’s premier engineering faculties.
