Expert training: Motor Systems Optimization (MSO)

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), in partnership with National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC), is pleased to announce the Call for Applications to participate in its Expert Training Programme on Motor Systems Optimization (MSO).

The MSO programme is part of the two-part Expert Training Programme on Energy Systems Optimization (ESO), which also covers Steam Systems Optimization (SSO). In 2023, these two components of the ESO training will be imparted separately. Participants are encouraged to join one or the other.

Why should you consider the MSO training?
Nearly all electrical energy consumed by industry is used by the millions of electrical motors installed worldwide. Responsible for driving both core industrial processes as well as auxiliary systems such as compressed air generation, ventilation and water pumping, motors are critical to nearly every industry on the planet. In UNIDO’s experience, motor-system optimization can significantly reduce an individual plant’s energy consumption. Most motor optimization investments show payback times within three years
What can you expect from the MSO training?
Since 2010, UNIDO has delivered its MSO training programme to industry and energy practitioners worldwide. Using expert insights and case studies, UNIDO’s MSO training details how industries can take advantage of the vast untapped potential for energy efficiency in electric motor-driven systems including fans, pumps and compressors. Designed for energy managers, operations staff, engineers, experts and vendors, this programme takes participants beyond the classroom into industry where they implement real-life MSO projects in partner enterprises.
Who will lead the course and where will it take place?
Through a series of in-person and online interactions over a 12-month period, participants will be guided through the course by international Motor Systems Expert Siraj Williams.
How much will it cost?
The training will be delivered free of charge to industries committed to implementing energy-efficient technologies and initiatives.
Who can apply?
In 2023 we will accept 30 participants for the MSO expert training programme and 30 participants for the SSO expert training programme. Participants will be selected under two categories:
  1. Individual category: individual applicants.
  2. Industries category: up to 2 applicants from. each organization

Applications for Industries

If you are applying as an industry these are the eligibility criteria:

  • Target industries: Metal (rolling, fabrication, metal finishing etc.); food and beverages; rubber (tyres, gloves etc.); textile and apparel; mining (tiles, porcelain, roofing tiles, cement etc.); consumer products; paper and printing; pharmaceutical and herbal; chemicals and paints; polymer (packaging, plastic goods, PVC etc.);
  • Manufacturing industries using electrical energy as an energy source;
  • Specifically motor systems in use (including pumps);
  • Maximum 2 participants per company (engineering/ science backgrounds are highly encouraged);
  • Preference will be given to industries having motors larger than 37kW and with monthly electrical energy consumption of more than 50,000kWh;
  • Willingness to commit to the project.

Applications for Individuals

If you are applying as an individual these are the eligibility criteria:

  • Energy efficiency practitioners, energy efficiency service providers, motor/pump equipment vendors, ESCO representatives and consultants are eligible;
  • Graduate of a higher educational institution in engineering or science (NVQ level 7) (preferably electrical engineering or mechanical engineering);
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a relevant industry and at least 2 years in energy auditing / MEP designing / motor system maintenance;
  • Proficient in English;
  • Computer software literacy and Microsoft Excel proficiency;
  • Current and future commitment of work in motor systems.
FEMALE CANDIDATES IN BOTH CATEGORIES ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO APPLY.
